Beware Of Mr. Baker - The Ginger Baker Documentary DVD

The worst thing about this documentary is not, as might be expected, Ginger's weapons grade grumpiness (that's pretty much how he's always been, kids). No, it's the weird 'Captain Pugwash' style animation linking the parts of Baker's life where no film was available. That, more than anything else, lets down this otherwise excellent biopic. Director (and Ashton Kutcher doppelganger) Jay Bulger blagged his way into Ginger's life by pretending to be from 'Rolling Stone' and the ebullient American is a perfect counterpoint to the curmudgeonly drummer. They spark off each other throughout with Bulger handling the drummer as you would a difficult grandparent. All the big names are here: Eric, Jack, Winwood, Lydon, Charlie Watts, plus a host of younger faces. "Cream gave birth to heavy metal!" gushes Metallica's Lars Ulrich. "It should have been fucking aborted!" retorts Ginger. That tells you all you need to know about this movie. Oh and Baker breaks the director's nose at the end.
Might appeal to people who enjoyed:
Tales of excess. This is a story of broken marriages, abandoned children, shattered dreams and squandered fortunes - Ginger frittered away the $5 million he got for the 2005 Cream reunion on polo ponies, for example. But the music is never less than wonderful and life-affirming throughout. Against the odds, Jay Bulger has done a great job here.
