Tuesday 6th August
Two beautiful sisters from Atlanta Georgia strode into Leicester on tuesday night with their band and stole the hearts of a bunch of seasoned gig-goers. On record Larkin Poe are just the loud side of quiet country tinged rock. Live they kick out any gentle inflections and really whip up a storm. Megans lapsteel guitar playing is sensational throughout the night and there are a couple of solos that are breathtaking. Then there is the call and response with sister Rebeccas scat singing. Rebecca is perky throughout the night and plays great lead guitar, mandolin and occasional violin. Their intent is laid bare second number in when the launch into a swampy Wade in the water. Many of the songs from their 4 eps are aired plus a couple of new songs planned for the album they will start recording when they get back to Georgia. Finally they come back to the stage alone for an almost acappella take on Buddy and Julie Millers Take me back. A wonderful end.
The audience at the Musician are only ever there for the music. Free of wankers which is a good thing. Apparently their 6th visit to the UK - catych them next time round.
Food & drink:
Excellent Italian round the corner pre-gig. New find - will be on the agenda for future visits. Wonderful fillet steak with Dolce Latte.
It made me think:
I love live music and I love this venue. Tom Russell last month, Larkin Poe this month and Kathryn Williams next up. Great stuff.
