Venue:
The Ark, Ann Arbor, MIchigan.
Date: 19/03/2015
Solo Lloyd – a man, a guitar and 30 odd years of songs. Playing the new album -Standards- and plenty of “old” both popular and obscure – (that’s Why I Love. Country Music and Hey Rusty). Between song banter was witty and self depreciating – ” here’s another song with the same chords”
A great night.
The audience:
53 year old folks who have followed him since the eighties. Many couples – Lloyd thanked the spouses that had been dragged along by their partner.
It made me think..
He was writing about middle aged angst when he was 23.

Going to see him Monday – thanks for confirming the wisdom in doing that

Ann Arbor? I visited there last year! Dawntreader Books, three actual record shops, friendly staff in the pubs, the Michigan Theatre (have I got it right?) where I saw Pride. A lovely town, I liked it a lot. I had no idea an Ann Arborite (is that what you are called?) posted here. Welcome!

Yes – that Ann Arbor – a lovely town indeed. Midwest college town – University of Michigan – Go Wolverines! – leading to all sort of liberal hippy goodness. And home of the Ark – simply the best venue I have ever been in – often described as a “listening room” – no f@$&wits ………..

What a back catalogue he’s got! This week I’ve been re-listening to the album he did with The Negatives. Some superb songs.

He played the Birchmere last night, and it was wonderful. As referenced upthread, the mix of music and patter in between was very, very well handled.
It’s the first time I’ve seen him, and I’d go see him again in a heartbeat. Everything seemed to work last night – the guitars were crisp and you could hear every note; likewise the vocals were good, and enunciated so well that you got every word in every line. Admittedly that’s kind of critical with LC, but I’ve been to shows where the music and the vocals trampled all over each other.
And lady in the front row who was having intermittent coughing fits: if the star of the show offers you some cough drops when he comes back after the intermission, you take them. Even if you don’t use them, they can have pride of place in your memorabilia.
It did make me think – he seems to be a one man industry. He never cracked America, but he filled the Birchmere quite easily. Good luck to him – professional, enjoyable and cracking tunes. What else could you look for?

Never seen LC live solo but I have lots of his music including recent output. He is still a great talent. Next time he plays a stage not too far away I will amend my first statement. Just looked on his site, he plays shows not too far away from my home but I`m on holiday, bollocks!
