Well, that was a fine old shindig thrown by Mr Retroman of this parish - a dirty blast of punk, power pop, mod and R&B action. Due to the Friday night traffic into Sarf London I missed the opening act and most of The Fallen Leaves set but caught the two at the top of the bill. However it was the Len Price 3 that I had come to see. Dressed in the traditional mod striped blazer they delivered a tight but loosely fun 55 minute set. Very few of the songs lasted more than 2 minutes - choppy guitar, pilled up Motown bass-lines and machine gun drumming. Could be dismissed as a nostalgic act but this felt really fresh. Garage pop about girls, alienation, escape and love. What's not to like? My particular favourites were the funky 'Christian In The Desert', the ferocious singularly lyric of 'Comanche', the pop melodies of 'Mr Grey' and the perfect mod tune 'If I Ain't Got You'. Ended with a gentle stage invasion and dance to the Big Daddy tribute 'Shirley Crabtree'. Ace!
The audience:
Well I said to my pal, Specs_Beard, at one point - I think most of the people in this room haven't got over The Jam splitting up. Old mods, punks, groovers, movers, shakers and party makers of all ages. Raucous and fun in a nice little venue.
It made me think:
£6 quid was an absolute steal for this level of entertainment. Keep an eye for the Retroman gigs and support his ventures that bring you uncomplicated good time rock n roll. Len Price 3 - they ain't nothing but a real good time.

Wow...Thanks Dave, that's a really nice review, appreciate that! Thanks to you and Specs_Beard for coming along, great to see you both there and I'm glad you had a good time. But mainly huge thanks for being - in the crowd photo of nearly 200 people - the only one giving me the finger...!

Had heard about this lot from various sources over the last few years, but had never taken the time to check them out. Thanks to this review I now own all their albums and am loving them to bits. Speaking as somebody who was a Mod in the 80s, and a big fan of the Medway bands in particular, I find I never quite get over my past, despite loving all sorts of music, this kind of garage punk pop still pushes my buttons. The Prisoners, Billy Childish, The Kinks, The Who, The Jam, The Direct Hits, The Clash and quite often The Hoodoo Gurus. Which is never a bad thing.
